Our History of Liberty and Hot Sauce

1775:  Patrick Henry gives his "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death speech.  And, the first commercial hot sauce was produced in America.

1807:  Thomas Jefferson steps down as president.  And, the first cayenne pepper sauce was produced for the masses.

1849:  The Mexican-American War rages. And the first recorded crop of "tobasco" peppers was grown. Colonel Maunsell White was our pioneer that grew this crop.  So our hot sauce pioneer was a military man!

1868:  President Ulysses S. Grant re-admits southern states to the union.  And, with ingredients of only peppers, vinegar, and salt, Tobasco started brewing.  They are currently producing 4.1 million gallons of hot sauce a year.

1918:  World War 1 ends.  And, Franks starts producing hot sauce.  They are producing 3.2 million gallons of hot sauce a year.

1923:  The stock market crashes and the Great Depression begins.  And, Texas Pete begins production.  Hot Sauce must have helped people through the Great Depression when food sources were limited and bland!

1950:  The Korean War begins.  And, McIlhenny starts using a "military grade" bottle.  This bottle had extra thick glass and a baked-on color label and was never offered to the public.  This bottle was also the start of hot sauce included in C-rats, and MRE's.

2014:  Russians invade Crimea.  And, Peppers of Key West proudly celebrates it's 22nd year providing the best hot sauce in the United States.

The history of hot sauce and American history go hand in hand!
